BPW MISSION

The mission of this Federation shall be to achieve equality for all women

in the workplace through advocacy, education, and information.

EMERALD CITY LOCAL OF BPW/WA

In 1911 the Seattle Business Girls Club was organized under the auspices of the YWCA. In 1919 this organization affiliated with the national federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs and changed its name from the Seattle Business Girls Club to Seattle First Business and Professional Women. In 1995 Seattle First added a tag line to its name to do business as Emerald City Local of BPW/WA.

The initial focus of the local was to assist women to complete high school – the need then. That focus has changed, over time, to promote college education for women. We have been instrumental in that focus by establishing a scholarship fund (administered by the Washington State Business and Professional Women’s Foundation) offered to women at our local level. Scholarships are also available at the state and national levels of BPW, and Emerald City contributes to those funds as well. We also actively support the work of Angeline House – a YWCA day shelter for Homeless women in Seattle.

Emerald City continues to support women’s equity and equality in the work place, from 1911 to the present, and to lobby state and national government for legislation to achieve these goals. We actively support the federation objectives, written in 1919.

EMERALD CITY LOCAL BPW/WA Fee: Active: $25.00; Student: $16.50

Emerald City members meet ten times a year on the first Monday of the months September through June. Each meeting and program are announced through email to each member. The meeting place, currently the Swedish Club, can be changed upon vote of the members. By joining through a Local Organization, such as Emerald City BPW, you will have access to meeting and networking opportunities in the area.

DISTRICT TWO BPW/WA Fee: Active: $ 3.00; Student: $ 3.00

District Two serves as a liaison between the state federation and the nine locals that it encompasses. Emerald City Local is a member of District Two upon payment of dues from the local treasury. BPW/WA is divided into six districts for the purpose of promoting state and national programs, promoting membership, organizing new and assisting existing local organizations and the state federation. The district conducts two meeting each year, usually in October and April, and all members are notified and encouraged to attend and participate.

BPW/WA Fee: Active: $15.00; Student: $ 7.50

BPW/WA serves as a liaison between the national federation and all locals within the state of Washington. Its purpose is to similar as stated above for the district; however, it is responsible for all statewide functions. The state conducts two meeting each year, in September and May. All members receive a Call to Conference through the state publication, the Washington Business Woman.

BPW/USA Fee: Active: $50.00; Student: $15.00

BPW/USA guides all state federations in promoting the mission, programs, and legislative platform. The officers and executive director of BPW/USA are frequently called upon to testify before Congress on issues important to working women and their families. All members receive the national publication, the National Business Women.

Upon payment of dues, an Active or Student Member in Emerald City Local is also a member at the district, state (BPW/WA); and, national (BPW/USA). A student member is provided all the benefits of membership at the dues shown. To join BPW as a student member, the applicant must be enrolled full-time in college, university or other accredited institution above the high school level.

Membership is open to all people who support the BPW Mission.
